General Membership Meeting Minutes, September 16, 2010

Meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m.


Secretary’s Report:

Motion to approve the minutes of July 15, 2010 by Laura Jacobson, seconded by Tony Sanchez. The motion carried.


Treasurer’s Report:

In Evan Hennessey’s absence, Dan Miller reported $49,962.45 in our checking account, $176.00 in our PayPal account, and $53,809.08 in our money market account.

Further, Dan reported that we are still awaiting some income from House Walk sponsors, and a handful of invoices yet to be received.


Standing Committee Reports:



Chair Alicia Lykins unable to attend.  David Williams passed along her warm welcome to new members John & Trish La Fleur of 373 Park St.



Chair Barb Counterman is planning to invite Lt. Bob Bedard of the Fire Prevention Bureau to do a presentation at our October meeting.  She also wanted to let everyone know that Ron Sessions will be doing a presentation on fire prevention Monday night at the SWAN neighborhood meeting.


Historic District

Chair Laura Jacobson reported on the success of GPA’s booth at the Elgin Biggest Block Party.  GPA’s “Gnome Your Elgin” activity had over 70 kids participate, and drew attention for GPA from quite a few parents and other adults.

We also won an award for Most Creative Activity.  Laura would like to thank the following for their assistance:  Jennifer Williams, Alicia Lykins, Tony Sanchez, Barb Counterman, Elisabeth Carrol, John & Carol Anderson, and Jo Coletti.


Laura reported an observation of some graffiti in the neighborhood, and reminded everyone to keep an eye out and report it to the city promptly.


Laura reported that she is preparing for the 5th annual Wassailing Saunter.  Date is still TBD.  Host houses are needed.  If you would like to open up your home for our annual festive gathering, please contact Laura ASAP.

Public Relations

Chair Dan Miller had nothing to report.


The wrap-up meeting for this year’s Housewalk is scheduled for next Wednesday, 9/22, 7:00 p.m. at the Elgin History Museum.

Ali Hallock reported over 1000 attendees for this year’s Housewalk.  Overall it appears to have been quite successful.  Dan Miller reported preliminary numbers that showed a net profit of approximately $8,376.


As always, the House Walk committee would like to extend a HUGE thanks to all of our sponsors, and to all those who came out to assist with executing this year’s event!


Thanks a Lot! Turkey Trot:

Co-chair Brenda Hennessey unable to attend.  Co-Chair Amanda Carlson reported that she is waiting for final confirmation of the race route from the city.  She passed around a sign-up sheet for people to volunteer to work on race day.  Amanda extended thanks to the following individuals for their contributions to date:  Jeff Jacobson, Ali Hallock, Julie Schmitt, David Williams, and Dan Miller.

Other Comments & Concerns:

Julie Schmitt indicated that the NHS volunteer day is coming up on Saturday, 9/25.

Julie also proposed that GPA develop a program to start using our funds for neighborhood improvements.  After brief discussion, there was a consensus that such a program would require the formation of a subcommittee.  Julie agreed to chair the Good Neighbor subcommittee.  If you would like to volunteer to serve on the committee, please contact Julie.

Jennifer Williams requested that GPA consider sponsoring the Elgin Area Historical Society’s annual Cemetery Walk, coming up on Sunday 9/26.  Jeff McIntire moved that we donate $100.  Julie Schmitt seconded.  The motion carried.


Jennifer Williams also reported that work was getting underway on several NSP homes, including 463 E. Chicago, 457 E. Chicago, 108 S. Channing, 485 E. Chicago, and 355 Moseley.


Ali Hallock is assembling the slate for candidates for 2011 GPA offices.  Please contact her BEFORE the October 21 meeting if you are interested in serving.

Dan Miller reported we will host a salvage on Saturday 9/18 at 519 Dundee.  Silent auction bids will be taken from 8-11, with winning bids posted at 1:00 p.m.  The event will run Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. – Dusk.


Deborah Allan reported that on Thursday 10/7 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., Near West Neighbors Association will host an open forum for political candidates running for State Representative and State Senator. The event takes place at the First Presbyterian Church of Elgin, 240 Standish St.


Jeff Jacobson reported that the political activist group Association for Legal Americans (AFLA) will host a town hall style meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 26th.  Featured speakers will include Mayor Ed Schock and Councilman Dave Kaptain.  The event will be at the American Legion, 820 N. Liberty.  Seating is limited to 200; reservations are on a first come, first served basis.  To reserve a seat, e-mail David White at [email protected] or call (847) 695-5564


Motion to adjourn:

Moved by John Anderson, seconded by Evan Williams (per David Williams).  Motion carried.  Meeting adjourned at 7:50.  Eric Echevarria was on-hand after the meeting for discussion of any issues anyone had.


Next general membership meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, 10/21/10, at 355 E. Chicago, Room 239.
