General Membership Meeting Proposed Minutes

February 16, 2012

Those in Attendance: Officer Williams, Officer Cummings, Karen and Chris Bach, Mark and Glenna Preradovic, Dan and Pat Miller, Tony Sanchez, Bill Briska, Ali Hallock

Treasurer’s Report

Bill Briska informed the group that for the past few years we have been spending more each year than we take in. Our Housewalk income and sponsorships are declining and we do have fixed expenses like upkeep of the landscaping in the neighborhood, our storage facility rental, and General Liability Insurance. Bill distributed a copy of the Budget that was approved by the Board on February 13 – a copy is at the end of these minutes.

Our total assets in CDs, Money Market account and checking come to $98,825.63.

ROPE Officer Report

Eric is on a month long paternity leave so Officer Cummings reported for him. He had nothing to report other than the fact that they had been watching a house on N. Gifford.

House Tour

A huge thank you was given to the Preradovics for offering to take charge of the kickoff pot luck. A coordinator for the Housewalk After Party is still needed. The date for the walk has been set at Saturday, September 8th. The location is the SWAN neighborhood which is the southwest side of Elgin.   Members of the SWAN organization have been contacted and are very enthusiastic about their neighborhood being featured. When Pat Hill was informed of the decision she immediately sent several wonderful pictures of houses in her neighborhood that she thinks would be good candidates.

Membership

A reminder to everyone that the membership pot luck dinner is Friday, April 20th at 6:30 at Lord’s Park Pavilion. These are always a lot of fun with great food, nice surroundings and wonderful conversation.

Program Committee

The general membership meeting for March will be Thursday the 15th. Gretchan Vapnar will give us a presentation on what’s happening at the Community Crisis Center. To make it even more interesting she has offered to host the meeting so we can see her facilities. It is an incredible building with a wonderful program. Don’t miss this one. The Crisis Center is located at the corner of Geneva and DuPage St. Ring the bell for admittance. The elevator will take you to the 3rd floor meeting room. Parking is available in their lot, the street, and behind Spates Temple.

Public Relations

A person to fill the PR position is needed. If you are interested, please contact Karen Bach at [email protected]

Historic District Committee

Dan Miller reported that the committee met on January 30th. Several important issues were discussed.

Gazette – should we have one? Should it be hard copy or electronic? Two people have volunteered to do the layout of an electronic newsletter but we are still in need of a person to write the content. If anyone is interested in working on a newsletter, please contact Dan Miller at dmiller155 @aol.com.

Christmas Party – should we have one? Should we try to do a Wassailing again after no one volunteered last year? Should we have one like we had years ago centered on kids with Santa making an appearance? If anyone would like to organize a Christmas party, please contact Dan.

Porch Parties – it was suggested that we have them again but to make it easier to host we should have people bring their own drinks and something to share.

Historic District Signs. The Gifford Park Association applied for a grant over 20 years ago to have the current Historic District signs made. Currently there are a lot missing and broken. The broken and peeling one on North St. near the exit to Burger King has been an embarrassment to the City of Elgin for several years. A few weeks ago Dan sent around a slide show of ones that are used in other cities. If you did not get a chance to see them or vote on your favorite, here is the link to view them: www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157629366226431/show/

Tony Sanchez has volunteered to design a new sign for us. I’m sure he would love some competition. If you are interested in submitting a design, contact Dan. The Old Main cupola has been a logo in our neighborhood and would probably be included on a new sign.

Dan informed the group of the bad news that the expensive and very nice interpretive sign at Simpson Electric on Dundee Ave. has recently been stolen. Many states have laws making it a serious crime for a recycling company to accept things like signs and copper from houses. When Dan wrote to representative Farnham about the problem he reported that his own home that he is trying to sell on River Bluff had copper piping stolen from it and that he is sponsoring legislation to try to alleviate the problem. If you are interested in reading the proposed legislation or in contacting Mr. Farnham, here is the info:

Watch for an announcement for a cleanup day in the spring at the pocket park at Chicago and Geneva. The benches and fence need to be painted and the dead vegetation needs to be cleared out.

Glenna asked Officer Cummings if the police are involved in reporting street lights that are out.   He said the night shift does so and encouraged all of us to report any that we see.

Pat Miller informed the membership that the homeowners association for the new homes on the Grand View site have been awarded a neighborhood improvement grant to make improvements on the city owned portion of the property. A public meeting to discuss the plans will be Monday, February 27th at 7:00 pm at the Centre. Pat promised to send out a reminder. Pat mentioned that she just found out that there has been a community garden on the site the result of a Neighborhood Improvement Grant awarded to the Community Garden Network of Elgin. There are a lot of renters nearby that might take advantage of it if they knew of its existence. It is mentioned on a community garden web site.

Glenna asked about the status of the vacant homes that St. Joe’s owns. Bill Briska reported that they have been given the okay by the Design Review subcommittee of the Heritage Commission to demolish the buildings and that GPA should be given a chance to salvage them.

Dan informed the group that a group of residents that live on Liberty are lobbying with the state and city to get truck traffic off of Liberty St. or even better, reroute Hwy. 25 out of the residential neighborhood.
