General Membership Meeting Minutes, February 17, 2011

Attending: David & Jennifer Williams, Dan & Pat Miller, Julie Schmitt, Doug Tomsha, John & Carol Anderson, Fran Cella, Donna Leetz, Barb Counterman, Tony Sanchez, Margaret Keen, Bill Briska, Bill Decker, Dorie Alpha, ROPE Officer Eric Echevarria

Guests: Mayor Ed Schock, Elgin police officers Lalley and Pavoris, Jennifer Shroder, Kristian Webb

 

Meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m.

 

Handouts and Announcements:

The Community Crisis Center will host a benefit auction and dinner on March 12th. The cost is $100 per person.

 

Secretary’s Report:

Motion to approve the minutes of January 20, 2011 by Donna Leetz, seconded by John Anderson. The motion carried.

 

Treasurer’s Report:

Dan Miller reported that some money has been moved from the checking account to the money market accounts.  GPA has a total of $105,429.06 in CD’s and the checking and money market accounts.

 

ROPE Officer’s Report:

ROPE officer Eric Echevarria reported the following:

1. The new online system reports 288 incidents in the area but that includes everything from traffic stops to prisoner exchange.

2. Soon there will be non parking on Tennyson. Residents will park in the city lots next to Burger King and Wait Ross Funeral Home. The lots will be 72 hours.

3. Please note that there is an ordinance against shoveling snow into the street. Keep emergency snow routes clear of vehicles or you will be towed.

4. March 2nd at Channing Elementary from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm Feeding Greater Elgin will be distributing food to needy families. Please see him to volunteer.

Standing Committee Reports:

 

Membership

Chair Dorie Alpha will get in touch with Alicia to get started on a new membership directory.

 

Program

Chair Fran Cella reported that a survey will go out to the membership for ideas on what they want to see for programs this year.

 

Historic District

Chair Donna Leetz reported she is having a meeting on March 28th at 7pm to go over ideas. Bring yours!

 

Public Relations

Chair Barb Counterman posted the meeting on the Daily Herald website.  She will look into updating the GPA facebook page.

 

Housewalk

Carol Anderson announced that the next meeting was March 7th at 7pm at the Elgin Area Historical Society.

 

New Website Development:

Dan Miller has been researching the cost to update the site.  A series of e-mails went around the board members.  Tony Sanchez has volunteered to lead the effort and coordinate GPA’s needs with the web designers.  The subcommittee will hold a meeting on Monday March 21st at 7pm. Location TBD.

 

Other Comments & Concerns:

Barbara Counterman announced that San Fillipo was having a warehouse sale at their factory at 1703 N Randall Rd.

 

Jennifer Williams announced that nominations for the Mayor’s Awards are due February 25th.  Event forms for Preservation Month are due March 25th.

 

Special Guest, Kristian Webb:

Neighbor Kristian Webb spoke about the deteriorating relationship between the parents and the administration of Channing Elementary. She asked for other concerned parents and neighbors to attend the U-46 Board Meeting on March 28th to voice their concerns.

 

Motion to adjourn:

Moved by John Anderson, seconded by Donna Leetz. Meeting adjourned at 8:01 pm.

 

Following adjournment, political candidates Jennifer Shroder (school board candidate) and Ed Schock (incumbent mayoral candidate) met with the assembly to present their positions, and to field questions.

 

The next general membership meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 355 E. Chicago, Room 239.
