Fire Prevention Presentation:

The evening concluded with a presentation by Lt. Bob Bedard of the Elgin Fire Prevention Bureau.  Topics of discussion included different fire prevention and fire fighting challenges found in older homes vs. newer homes.   Lt. Bedard gave several recommendations, including the following critical reminders:

1. Be careful not to overload electrical circuits.  Have old or questionable wiring updated by a certified electrician.

2. Be sure to install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the house, including the attic and the basement.  Install detectors within 18” of the ceiling, and within 15 feet of any sleeping area.  For battery-operated units, remember to test monthly, and change the batteries twice a year.

3. Keep a 5-lb. fire extinguisher handy in your kitchen, and a 10-lb. unit in the garage.  Because of the speed with which a fire can grow, you CAN NOT rely on water from a sink or garden hose to extinguish a fire, and therefore…

4. CALL 911 immediately if you have a fire.  DO NOT DELAY in the hopes of putting it out yourself!

Thank you to program committee chair Barb Counterman for arranging the presentation.

Other Comments & Concerns:

Dan Miller offered thanks to Jennifer Williams for arranging for GPA to host a salvage at the property at 519 Dundee.  Salvage took place on Sat and Sun 9/18 & 9/19.  Dan reported that the salvage took in $650, which was split with the property owner.  Net profit for GPA was $325.

Dan also reported another upcoming demolition at 209 Franklin.  Unfortunately, in Dan’s estimation there is not enough to warrant a salvage event, but he will attempt to rescue some details prior to demolition.

Glenna Preradovic reported that Medusa’s Night Club is sponsoring a benefit Halloween party on Friday 10/29 from 8 – 10:30 p.m. to benefit the Anderson Animal Shelter.

Donna Leetz reported on her new program she has dubbed SNIP – Spay and Neuter Inside Pets.  In cooperation with local vets, she has arranged a discount program for people to get their inside cats spayed or neutered.  As always, thank you to Donna for her ongoing crusade to bring Elgin’s feral cat population under control.  For information or to offer assistance, please contact Donna.
