General Membership Meeting Minutes 9/17/2009

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. 

Joe’s Handouts:

Included feedback cards from the Housewalk, a reference book on historic bathroom designs, business cards from Jan’s Antiques in Chicago and Houtkamp Art Glass Studio in Rockford.  Finally, a note about “The Old House New House Home Show” taking place Sept 26-27 at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles.

Secretary’s Report:

Approval of the minutes of July 16th moved by Donna Leetz, seconded by Laura Jacobson.  motion carried. 

Treasurer’s Report:

In Evan Hennessey’s absence, Dan Miller reported $45,486.77 in our checking, and $53,558.41 in our Money Market account(s), with some Housewalk deposits still to be made. 

ROPE Officer Report

ROPE officer Eric Echevarria was unable to attend.

Historic Committee:

Chair Jeff Jacobson reports that he is preparing to do an updated review of missing historic district street signs and lights.  If you know of any, please let him know. 

Jeff extended a big Thank You to all the volunteers who were able to deliver the Gazettes on short notice, prior to the Housewalk. 

Jeff is now looking for 4 houses for the holiday Wassailing Saunter.  Date to be confirmed shortly.  Anyone in the historic district who would like to volunteer to open up their home for GPA’s annual celebration of good cheer, please contact Jeff.

Membership Committee:

Chair Alicia Lykins reported that we have 3 new members:

Alejandra Rodriguez – 439 DuPage

Welcome all to the Gifford Park Association! 

House Walk Committee:

Ali Hallock reported that she is compiling the final attendance numbers for this year’s event.  The weather was very cooperative, but attendance was still on the low side.  Her figures show that we had about 800 paying attendees.  Julie Schmitt reported that we also received $5,750 in sponsorships, including in-kind donations 

Once more, thank you to all of those who volunteered to open up their homes for this year’s event, and to the legion of volunteers who assisted in making this year’s tour an outstanding success!

 

Program Committee: 

Chair Barb Counterman was unable to attend, but had nothing to report

 

Public Relations Committee: 

Chair Fran Cella was unable to attend.  Joe Kjellander reported that on September 3rd, Jay Kjellander attended the Illinois St. Andrews Society Kilted Classic golf tournament that GPA sponsored, and spent time talking up the GPA and the Housewalk. 

Dream Team Committee:

Chair Dan Miller had nothing to report. 

2009 Board Elections:

Nomination committee chair Pat Miller is preparing the slate of candidates for presentation at the October 15 general membership meeting, with the voting taking place at the November 19 meeting.   

The by-laws require NEW candidates for the offices of President, Vice-President, and 2nd At-Large, as the current office-holders have reached the end of their respective term limits.

The current Treasurer and Secretary may run for re-election. 

We also need to review the current chairpersons for the standing committees. 

Anyone interested in running for a GPA office or serving as a standing committee chairperson for 2010 should contact Pat Miller ASAP.

Other Comments & Concerns:

Jeff Jacobson reports that we have received the final sponsorship payments from this year’s GPA Golf Classic.  Net profit was $1,850. 

Jeff is looking to assemble a committee IMMEDIATELY for the 2010 Golf Classic.  Next year’s classic is scheduled for Friday, May 21st at the Highlands of Elgin golf course.  To join the committee and/or volunteer your support, please contact Jeff ASAP!

Jennifer Fritz-Williams from City of Elgin Community Development reported that her department plans to make a presentation of recommendations regarding the use of federal Neighborhood Stabilization Program funds to the City Council.  The presentation will be next Wednesday, September 23rd at the committee of the whole meeting at 6:00.  Those interested in hearing the recommendations are encouraged to attend. 

David Williams reported that we have a surplus of some party supplies in the storage locker that can be made available for people hosting GPA events, such as porch parties or the Wassailing Saunter. 

Laura Jacobson reported that she is still engaged with the city regarding the purchase and installation of historic district banners. 

There was a discussion regarding the holiday lamp-post garlands.  It was agreed to schedule a get-together when we get closer to the holidays, to sort out and assess the condition of the garlands and bows that are currently in storage at Joe Kjellander’s house and Julie Schmitt’s house.
